Element Group 1A; Alkali metals (Periodic Table #1)
Alkali metals are very reactive metals found in group 1A of the Periodic Table. This group includes lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium and francium with the last two being the most reactive. With 1 electron in the outermost shell, they are ready to give up one electron in ionic bonding with other elements. Their physical properties include good malleability and ductility, they are good conductors of electricity and are softer than most of the other metals. Alkali metal explode when they are exposed to water. This is because one hydrogen atom splits off from water molecule to form hydrogen gas, while other hydrogen atom joins oxygen to form hydroxide. The process being exothermic, the liberated hydrogen gas often catches fire.
