Structure of atoms #2 : Electronic Configuration

Image
The arrangement of electrons in the various shells/orbits/energy levels of an atom of the element is known as electronic configuration. Bohr-Bury scheme Electrons revolve around the nucleus in different energy levels or shells and each shell is associated with definite energy. The energy of the K shell is the least while those of L, M, N and O shells increases progressively. We also know that any system that has least energy is the most stable. 1 s t  energy level is K shell 2 n d  energy level is L shell 3 r d  energy level is M shell 4 t h  energy level is N shell and so on. Electronic configuration of an element Bohr and Bury Scheme - Important Rules 1. Maximum number of electrons that can be accommodated in a shell is given by 2n 2  where n=shell number For 1 s t  energy level, n = 1 Maximum number of electrons in 1 s t  energy level = 2n 2 2 x (1) 2 = 2 For 2 n d  energy level n=2 Maximum number of...

Discovery of atomic structure through experiments #1

Image
In the study of matter, the most important and basic thing is atoms and its structure. This has been discovered through a series of process and experiments by great scientists which I shall try to present below in a comprehensive manner.  1. Plum Pudding model (or Thomson's model of atom): The plum pudding model The plum pudding model was a model of the atom that incorporated the recently discovered electron, and was proposed by J. J. Thomson in 1904. Thomson had discovered the electron in 1897.  In this model, the atom is composed of electrons surrounded by a soup of positive charge to balance the electrons' negative charges, like negatively charged "raisins" surrounded by positively charged "pudding". The electrons were thought to be positioned throughout the atom, but with many structures possible for positioning multiple electrons, particularly rotating rings of electrons.    In Thomson's model, electrons were free to rotate in...

Periodic Table... A SUMMARY

Image
The  periodic table  is a tabular arrangement of the chemical elements, organized on the basis of their  atomic numbers, electron configurations  (electron shell model), and recurring chemical properties . Elements are presented in order of increasing atomic number (the number of protons in the nucleus). The standard form of the table consists of a grid of elements laid out in 18 columns and 7 rows , with a double row of elements below that . The table can also be deconstructed into four rectangular blocks : the  s-block to the left , the  p-block to the right , the  d-block in the middl e, and the  f-block below that . The rows of the table are called  periods ; the columns are called  groups , with some of these having names such as halogens or noble gases. Standard 18-column form of the periodic table HERE GOES A TABULAR REPRESENTATION OF THE CLASSIFICATION O...
