About the song... (Credit: Wikipedia)
"Manic Monday" is a song by the American pop rock band The Bangles, and the first single released from their second studio album, Different Light (1986). It was written by Prince, using the pseudonym "Christopher". Originally intended for the group Apollonia 6 in 1984, he offered the song to The Bangles two years later. Lyrically it describes a woman who is waking up on Monday, wishing it were still Sunday.
The song, which was released on Monday January 27, 1986 by Columbia Records, received generally positive reviews from music critics and some comparisons with The Mamas & the Papas' "Monday, Monday". It became The Bangles' first hit, reaching number two in the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as in Austria, Canada, Germany and Ireland, and peaked within the top five of New Zealand, Norway and Switzerland. It was later certified silver in the UK by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). The song has been covered by a number of other artists.
Lyrics
Six o'clock already
I was just in the middle of a dream
I was kissin' Valentino
By a crystal blue Italian stream
But I can't be late
'Cause then I guess I just won't get paid
These are the days
When you wish your bed was already made
It's just another manic Monday
I wish it were Sunday
'Cause that's my fun day
My I don't have to run day
It's just another manic Monday
Have to catch an early train
Got to be to work by nine
And if I had an aeroplane
I still couldn't make it on time
'Cause it takes me so long just to figure out what I'm gonna wear
Blame it on the train
But the boss is already there
It's just another manic Monday
Wish it were Sunday
'Cause that's my fun day
My I don't have to run day
It's just another manic Monday
All of the nights
Why did my lover have to pick last night
To get down?
(Last night, last night)
Doesn't it matter
That I have to feed the both of us
Employment's down
He tells me in his bedroom voice
"C'mon honey, let's go make some noise"
Time it goes so fast
(When you're having fun)
It's just another manic Monday
I wish it were Sunday
'Cause that's my fun day
I don't have to run day
It's just another manic Monday
I wish it was Sunday
'Cause that's my fun day
It's just a manic Monday
Review
Though the song comes
with very simple a lyrics, the music and the voice play the magic... a
melodious magic indeed! The song expresses the wish of a woman to enjoy
life for yet another day...make it a Sunday, her fun day. She says that no
matter what, there is no way to be on time. (and here I ask what actually is right
time?? ) The line that catches my thought the most is -
"Doesn't it matter
"Doesn't it matter
That I have to feed the both of us
Employment's down"
The girl has to wake up
yet another day early in the morning, leave her pleasant dreams behind and go
to a depressing work. She has to give up all the noise and bustle she aspires
for... may be just for two square meals a day for herself and her lover. But yet
the swiftness in the voice, the excitement in the woman that is depicted
through the song in the hope of a day when she shall escape the heated moments
and be at peace is unmatched. It is this thing in the voice, in the music that
makes me love the song more and more each time I hear it. Well done The
Bangles! The voice of Susanna Hoffs and the upbeat tune throughout the
song make it a grand success. The instrumentals...guitar, bass and drum have
been used beautifully and successfully. And yet another speciality is the background vocals!
This is the first time I
am reviewing an American pop rock song mostly because it was a tremendous help
to me for a long time recently... have already heard it a hundred times. This
song brings forth a new spirit in me. I am usually a listener of very soft
songs but this goes to be an exception... an exception I love. The music is
fantastic and the voice... energetic, I would say.
